2020

Agosto

Event type: Project

Posizione: Egadi Islands, Sicily, Italia

Contatto: Mario Arena, mario@gue.com

Data: da Agosto 12, 2020 a Agosto 20, 2020

Descrizione: We are planning a 40-day campaign during July and August (broken into 4 groups of 9 days each) to explore one of the most important archaeological discoveries of this century: The Battle of Egadi Islands. This naval battle fought in 241 BC was discovered 10 years ago by RPM Nautical Society and Soprintendenza del Mare of Sicily and involved an estimated 600 and 1000 ships that clashed in a terrible struggle sinking some 100 ancient warships and caused the death of thousands of warriors. GUE joined in the yearly summer campaigns four years ago, investigating the bottom of the sea while working with surface-based robots and electronic systems employed by archaeologists. Up to now, 23 bronze warship rams, some 40 bronze helmets and 1000 amphorae have been found.

Last year’s campaign brought several important new discoveries, some of which require additional work and opened new perspectives to the investigations. In an area measuring only some 20 x 10 meters, divers operating with hand held metal detectors located a concentration of artifacts including a number of bronze helmets, parts of personal armor, a sword, a blade, coins and other artifacts buried under the sediment. This concentration found towards the end of our campaign couldn’t be investigated thoroughly and is incredibly promising.

Thanks to the use of an AUV operated from RPM scientific vessel, last year’s discovery also included another area of the battle, east of the wide array of artifacts previously found and investigated. In this area, three warship rams and two anchors (the first anchors found in the whole battle site) were found. This year, GUE divers will have to operate on the rams and anchors that are still on the bottom in order to document and prepare them for the recovery to the surface. In short, we have much more work than what we can accomplish on this site which will keep unveiling for many years to come. We hope to put together a strong team with old and new players.

During the campaign we will be staying in the museum’s guest house, in single rooms with a bathroom. The GUE teams will operate in collaboration with RPM staff and archaeologists. During the project, divers will have the opportunity to visit RPM scientific vessel HERCULES, use metal detectors, the new hoover system SUEX ROSA, etc.

The campaign is structured in 4 groups of 9 days each. The participation is limited to a max of 7 deep divers and 2 safety divers per group.
Dates for the entire project:
1. July 16 - 24
2. July 25 - Aug 2
3. Aug 3 - 11
4. Aug 12 - 20

In the next few weeks we’ll set up a mailing list for the team to address several aspects of the planning.

Requirements:
The requirement for participating as a deep diver is Rebreather diver (either RB80 or CCR) with substantial experience of deep diving in the ocean.
The requirement for participating as a safety diver is Tech 1. Safety divers are very important and appreciated in this dynamic operation.
The site is at a depth of 80 to 90 meters, in open sea, in an area with strong currents. Dives are scooter dependent.

Costs:
Participation fee for deep divers is 1800 euro, including accommodation in single room, logistics and diving operation. It does NOT include breathing gasses, Sofnolime, equipment rental and food.
Rental of equipment is 250 euro for the whole time. The package includes rebreather frame, stages as needed, SUEX XJ DPV, and other items like regulators, backplate, fins if needed and agreed (we have a limited amount of these).
Participation fee for safety divers is 900 euro, including accommodation in single or double room, logistics, diving operation, rental of doubles, diving gasses.

Donations:
You can also support the project with a very appreciated donation. This year we’ll have to invest in equipment. We may have to buy a tender or secondary 5-6 meters RIB, as we need a second boat for safety and flexibility and it does not seem like it will be available from the sources we used in the past. Furthermore, we’ll have to buy 3-5 metal detectors units, some action camera, reels, lift bags and stages, materials for moorings, a small photo-lab for ensuring good quality of the scientific pictures of the artifacts, a hand held GPS with plotter and an additional gas analyzer. We hope you will consider contributing to the project, even a small amount. We’re open to discuss the transfer of right for images or video clips, invoicing sponsorship, mentions, etc.

Event type: Project

Posizione: Lampedusa, Sicily, Italia

Data: da Agosto 26, 2020 a Settembre 3, 2020

Descrizione: We’ve been exploring the high sea of the Central Mediterranean with the help of fishermen since 2006. Up to now, we have found 38 shipwrecks of which the last two were found during last year's expedition. The majority of these wrecks belong to the Battle of Convoys from WW2. Several are magnificent freighters which still have their cargo holds full of military supplies and are colonized by incredible marine life. The wrecks are at several depths, ranging from 33 to 130 meters. Most of the wrecks have been visited only by us. No one else is aware of their existence because they are so remote, laying 40 to 100 miles off shore from Lampedusa Island. We still have a lot of work to do on these wrecks. Some haven’t been identified yet, and many have to be appropriately documented. We have also the position of some wrecks where no one has ever dived.

The project with these wrecks is that of locating, identifying, and documenting them in several ways. The aim is to organize a multi-media exhibition mainly dedicated to the Battle of Convoys and secondly to the War on Traffic of the German U-boats during WW1. We are collaborating with the Soprintendenza del Mare and the Museum of Lampedusa island, which will be the first location hosting this exhibition.

The expedition's base will be the island of Lampedusa, from which we aim to do two excursions in high sea of the duration of 1,5 - 3 days each to reach the wrecks. The excursions at sea will be on board a very spartan fishing boat: pretty uncomfortable, but feasible with proper spirit. On board we’ll be sleeping in sleeping bags on the floor. Furthermore it is relatively expensive, mainly due to the long distances we need to travel with the boat.

Dates:
We’ll be supporting 4 expeditions of 9 days each, and we can accept a maximum of 5 divers per expedition. The starting and end date of the expedition is to be intended as arrival and departure dates.

Aug 26 - Sept 3: expedition on shallower wrecks (33 to 60 meters). Minimum requirement for this expedition is Tech 1, even if Tech 2 level would make it more worth the effort. Tech 1 participants will have the opportunity to take a GUE Tech 60 rating during the trip. It is also an ideal trip for rebreather divers with limited experience. The wrecks we’ll try to visit can vary depending on several factors (weather, new positions from fishermen, team’s requests, etc). We, as a team, can also decide to focus on one or two wrecks only to document them better and/or identify, access more areas, etc.
A tentative plan is:
  • Italian escort destroyer RN LUPO (50 meters)
  • SS VELOCE (50 meters)
  • SS REICHENFELS (33 meters)
  • SS INGO (60 meters)
  • British RN LST429 (38 meters)
  • Free French Navy submarine LE NARVAL (40 meters)
Cost:
Participation fee: 2500 euro, including accommodation in double rooms, in apartments or houses, logistics, diving operation and rental of equipment package. Accommodation on the island will be either in apartments or in houses for the whole duration of each expedition. The package includes doubles or rebreather frame, stages as needed, SUEX XJ DPV, and other items like regulators, backplate, fins if needed and agreed (we have a limited amount of these). It does NOT include breathing gasses, Sofnolime, and food.

Ottobre

Event type: Project

Posizione: Siracusa, Italia

Contatto: Mario Arena, mario@gue.com

Data: da Ottobre 12, 2020 a Ottobre 19, 2020

Descrizione: GUE Instructor Fabio Portella found an ancient wreck in 2019 at 67 meters of depth, only 80 meters away from the wreck of an American DC3 “Dakota" he found the previous year. The team, led by Fabio, identified the airplane as number 41-18698, which sank on July 13, 1943, during operation “Fustian”. It was carrying paratroopers, and it still had one open parachute and two Sten machine guns visible in the aircraft. Ancient remains were found nearby, which seem to be a cargo of terracotta dishes and bowls, dozens of pieces scattered on the sea bed. It is currently difficult to say if they are from ancient times or from the medieval ages, as the team dived only once on the site, and the video they shot with a GoPro doesn’t give enough details to allow archaeologists to study and identify the artifacts.

We plan to work in collaboration with the Soprintendenza del Mare on both wrecks during an 8-day project. The objectives are to:
- Help install a series of bollards around the area in order to protect the wrecks from drag-fishing nets. Fabio has secured the permission for this.
- Document the airplane with 3D photogrammetry.
- Install a reference grid with squares of 2 x 2 meters of the area of the ancient cargo.
- Recover specimens of the ancient cargo.
- Dust the area of the ancient cargo, and dig some test trenches with the SUEX hoover system.
- Inspect the area with metal detectors.
- Document the area with 3D photogrammetry.

The site is at 67 meters depth, one mile from shore.

The team will be limited to 10 divers.

Participation fee is 1500 euros and includes accommodation in a triple room in a camp bungalow, with towels, blankets, sheets, and breakfast, as well as logistics, diving operation, and a rental of equipment package. The package includes doubles or rebreather frame, stages as needed, and other items like regulators, backplate, and fins if needed and agreed upon (we have a limited amount of these). The package also includes transport from and to airport, and a series of cultural excursions with guides (English and Italian) for visiting the old city of Siracusa, and the archaeological area and museum, among others.
The package does NOT include breathing gases, Sofnolime, or food.

The project will take place October 12 -19 (8 days in total, 7 days of diving).

Event website: Wreck Project SS Kalliopi

Description: This spring we will initiate a unique project, a joint venture between Mario Arena, JP Bresser, & Maurizio Grbac from Krnicadive.

During the week from 25 - 29 May 2020, we will be organizing a project week focused on the wreck of the SS Kallopi and the hunt for the lost wreck of a B17 Flying Fortress, based on a lost in action report we possess, expected to be located close to the wreck of the Kalliopi.

Sonar scans will be done prior to the project to minimize the search area, and our work on the Kalliopi will be focused exploring and documenting the engine room and creating 3D models from parts of the stern section.

A short project documentary will be produced, and we are on the look-out for some serious avengers, preferably with Documentation Diver certifications.

Requirements: Tech 1 for support in the shallow areas, CCR/RB80/Tech 2 required for the deeper parts.

We have limited availability for this project, so get in touch swiftly if you would like to join the adventure.

We will tour glaciers and icebergs on zodiac cruises exploring areas few people have ever seen before.
