Cave Metering Project

Cave Metering Project

In 2003, an effort was initiated to install seven oceanographic meters that measure water velocity, temperature, and electrical conductivity at various points within the Wakulla Cave system. The meters were installed by cave divers of the Woodville Karst Plain Project (WKPP) and are accessible for data downloads by cables running from the meters to the land surface through three wells that have been installed into the cave system. Additionally, water sampling tubes have been installed at each of the meter stations and run to the land surface through the wells with the meter cables. Data from the meters is downloaded monthly by the Florida Geological Survey (FGS). The water sampling tubes have been incorporated into the Northwest Florida Water Management District's (NWFWMD) regular spring sampling program.

One of the meters was temporarily installed into the Leon Sinks cave system at Turner sink and produced the first definitive measurements of flow, temperature, and conductivity along the Leon Sinks flow path.
