Descrição: The Orange County Underwater Explorers (OCUE) are launching a Project Baseline effort beginning at Shaw’s Cove in Laguna Beach, California. This project will establish a one-year ecological baseline of local marine life and conditions, with the long-term goal of expanding to neighboring coves along the Laguna coast.
Divers will document broad flora and fauna using underwater photography, videography, and written observations. Supporting abiotic data—including visibility, temperature, and tide state—will be recorded during each dive.
A dedicated mapping team will use GPS buoys and acoustic pingers to chart key waypoints and create a diver-friendly navigation map of the site.
All data will be compiled in a central repository for long-term comparison.
Results will be shared through the GUE Project Portal, highlighted in Quest Magazine, and prepared for peer-reviewed publication. The dataset will also be structured to contribute to global repositories such as GBIF and OBIS.
This is a community science initiative designed to involve local divers, strengthen connections with conservation groups and universities, and provide actionable insights into the health of Laguna’s nearshore ecosystems.

This more than a hundred years old steamer rests on a steep underwater slope near the Croatian coast, at a depth of about 28 to 55 meters. The aim of the project is to create a high-quality 3D model of the wreck using photogrammetry and to prepare comprehensive video documentation. By combining modern documentation technologies with technical diving, we want to preserve a digital record of the current state of the wreck, allowing both divers and those interested in marine history to explore it virtually. From April 17 to April 24, 2027, our liveaboard trip will take us along the Northern Route—featuring various reefs and wrecks—as well as to the Brother Islands, where there is a chance to spot large marine life. The tour is suitable for both recreational and technical divers; everyone is welcome. As always, we are a diverse and—above all—relaxed group where everyone gets to enjoy the experience to the fullest. Whether diving with a single tank or a CCR, the focus is on our shared passion, not on breaking records.
Key Details:
- The Boat: As usual, we have an experienced liveaboard vessel equipped to meet our needs, including double tanks, stage cylinders, GUE-compliant gas mixes, and CCR support (also GUE-compliant). However, recreational divers are warmly welcome; we always have a diverse mix of divers on board.
- The Tour: North/Wrecks plus Brothers (starting and ending in Hurghada).
- Diving: 6 days of diving with 3 recreational dives per day, or 1–2 technical dives (depending on the depth of the technical dive).
- Guides: The tour will be led by GUE instructors Keith and Kaddi.
- Prerequisites: Minimum certification for depths up to 30m and 50 logged dives; proof of Trimix certification for dives deeper than 30m; fitness to dive (medical certificate required for those aged 40+ or with pre-existing conditions); and dive accident insurance.

Descrição: In 2021 and 2022, GUE Sweden conducted a survey of ghost nets in the marine reserve Skånska Kattegatt. The final report concluded that ghost nets should be retrieved from eleven wrecks and that the situation on the remaining wrecks in the area should be mapped and documented. In 2025 and 2026, GUE Sweden and Operation Spöknät returned to Skånska Kattegatt and started retrieval activities. Due to difficult weather conditions, the task could not be finalised and we are therefore looking at a return in 2027.
The purpose of this project is to reduce the amount of marine litter and minimize the risk of ghost catches of porpoises, fish, seabirds and other marine life by salvaging ghost nets in Skånska Kattegatt. The project is implemented by experienced divers in support of and in coordination with the Skåne County Administrative Board, which is the manager of the nature reserve.
This project is pending funding.
For 2027, we plan three weeks with a maximum depth of 30 metres so all diving will be performed on Nitrox. The dates are three weeks; 3-10, 10-17 and
17-24 July 2027.
Please note that the area is very exposed and therefore sensitive to changing weather conditions. There is also a strong surface current frequently present and we have therefore a requirement of GUE DPV1 for all participants. Both OC and CCR are welcome.

The activities for 2027 are planned for six consecutive weeks and the goal the different weeks is similar; to retrieve and document as much ghost nets as possible taking weather, diving conditions and divers’ experience into consideration to be able to do this in a safe and efficient way. Please note, however, that the area is very exposed and therefore sensitive to changing weather conditions. There are also additional documentation tasks that we are planning to conduct during these weeks.
All diving in 2027 is planned at about 40 meters and priority will therefore go to CCR Tech1-divers.
